Who would have thought that I’d be writing about a running achievement! But here I am. Now, you might be thinking that the 5K bit might be the gain, but it isn’t. The biggest achievement for me was enjoying the process!! I followed the Public Health England Couch to 5K App which, believe it or not, actually made me want to run. On one of the runs, Jo Whiley even had me chanting (out loud) “I love running” ”I’m enjoying being on this run”!!! The idea behind it was to change my mindset about running – mind over matter - and, although my body might not have been particularly enjoying that moment in time, as I said my new mantra out loud – and giggled a bit as I did – my mindset really did shift!! It’s something I continued to “chant” whenever I was finding a run tough, or getting a bit bored. Within a few short weeks I was actually running for about 30 full minutes – in one go!!! I’m not the fastest, and I don’t run to compete with anyone, but that doesn’t matter. And that’s the beauty that I found in it; I think. It’s just you, your pretty printed leggings, the goals you set, and ultimately having the pleasure of hitting those goals.
For me, becoming a runner, because that’s what has happened, gave me the kick start I needed. Other goals I had floating around in my head suddenly didn’t seem quite so out of reach. The link between sport and mental health was all of a sudden so clear to me. Give it a go, see what you think. On the starting line:
Wardrobe: Obviously having all the gear makes you feel like you have more of an idea. So, my first task was getting kitted out. I was lucky enough to get a brand spanking pair of new trainers for my Birthday (thanks, love). Nice, comfy, sparkly new trainers. I then bought 3 pairs of patterned running leggings (I absolutely needed 3!!) 3 new t-shirts and 1 long sleeved top - very professional looking tops. Oh, and a pack of headband things to keep my hair off my face (I get sweaty, I was thinking ahead!) That was me committed. Plus, I wouldn’t live it down if I didn’t make use of my new stuff!!! In my defence I only bought multiples as it made things ‘cheaper’, and I had been given a little bit of money for my Birthday.
Schedule: Each 'run' morning I’d plan what time I was going to get out and get it done. I’d make sure that I had time to get into my kit – trainers, funky running leggings, t-shirt (long sleeve top if needed) and hair up and back, app on. As I got into the habit of getting changed and ready at my specific time, I started to notice my body almost started to tell me it wanted to go out…almost like the dogs, I guess haha!!
Diet: I hope I don’t lose you here. I’m not about to start preaching, don’t worry. I’m just telling my story.
I didn’t used to eat breakfast, so this was the first change I had to make. Nothing crazy, just a bowl of porridge (the instant kind) with a few berries chucked on top. That was the main change for me. I was more mindful about eating more healthily for lunch and dinner, and my snacks were more likely to be chewy cereal bars or fruit than a packet of crisps. I knew that I needed to give my body decent grub to get the most of out of it (and so my new patterned running leggings continued to fit me!) but I wasn’t ridiculously strict – I was running, after all! I deserved treats if I wanted them!!
If you have any worries at all about giving couch to 5K a go, then PLEASE don't - it's unbelievable. It is obviously hard, and after your first run you might feel a bit petrified at the thought of running for any longer than 60 seconds at a time, but mark my words within a few weeks you'll be properly shocking yourself!! Get yourself some colourful running leggings and start your journey!
